Garden Sheds Explained: Choosing the Right Size and Material
Share
A good garden shed keeps tools, bikes and equipment secure and weatherproof all year round. Here's what to consider before you buy.
1. Material
Plastic/resin sheds (such as Keter) are low-maintenance, rot-proof and rust-proof — no painting or treating required. Metal sheds (galvanised steel) are strong, secure and fire-resistant. Wooden sheds offer a classic look but need occasional treating to stay weatherproof.
2. Size
Measure your space and think about what you'll store. A 6x4ft shed suits basic tools and a mower; 8x6ft and above gives room for bikes, furniture and larger equipment. Allow space around the shed for access and ventilation.
3. Roof Style
An apex (pointed) roof gives more headroom and sheds rainwater well, while a pent (sloped) roof suits tighter spaces and positions against a wall or fence.
4. Security and Foundations
Look for lockable doors and reinforced panels if you'll store valuable items. Most sheds need a firm, level base — paving slabs or a timber/plastic foundation kit work well.
